Witness To A Journey

Witness to a Journey follows Michael Strong, a young architect from Kansas who arrives in San Francisco in 1966 and rents a second-floor apartment overlooking the corner of 18th and Castro Streets. What begins as a simple move to a promising neighborhood becomes a lifetime spent witnessing, and ultimately participating in the birth of the modern LGBTQ+ civil rights movement.

Through Michael's apartment window, the audience experiences history as it unfolds. The early years are marked by fear, secrecy, and police persecution. Michael meets an extraordinary chosen family that includes the flamboyant and resilient Taffy, the larger-than-life drag performer Jules Davis (whose stage persona is Francesca de Biscotti), the irreverent Tony, the compassionate nurse Frank, and eventually legendary activist Harvey Milk. Together they transform from survivors into activists, building a community where none previously existed.

As the decades pass, the musical chronicles many defining moments in LGBTQ+ history, including the aftermath of the Compton's Cafeteria uprising, the impact of the Stonewall Riots, the birth of San Francisco Pride, Harvey Milk's political campaigns and election, his assassination, the White Night Riots, the AIDS epidemic, the struggle for marriage equality, and the Supreme Court's recognition of same-sex marriage. Each historic milestone is experienced not as distant history but through deeply personal conversations, friendships, love stories, and original musical numbers.

At its emotional center is Taffy's remarkable transformation. Introduced as a homeless, rejected Puerto Rican teenager surviving through drag performance and sex work, he grows into a respected counselor who dedicates his life to helping LGBTQ+ youth. Together, Michael and Taffy create the family they never believed possible by raising Alex, a lesbian teenager abandoned by her parents, proving that family is defined not by blood but by love and commitment.
